  • Background
  1. RBP4 and omentin-1 are adipokines, which play an important role in the development of obesity-related complications.
  2. Adipose tissue act as an endocrine organ and communicates with other organs of the body by the synthesis and release of bioactive molecules called adipokines.
  3. Adipokines are peptides that transmit the information of adipose tissue to other organs like the liver, brain, pancreas, muscular and immune systems.
  • Background
  1. Omentin-1 is an adipokine with anti-inflammatory and insulin-sensitizing effects, which is produced by visceral adipose tissue. In obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus, its expression is reduced and decreased omentin levels have been noted.
  2. Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) is the only specific transport protein for retinol in the serum, RBP4 is an adipokine that is involved in the development of insulin resistance, and elevated serum levels of RBP4 have been associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases, which are correlated with obesity.
  • Background
  1. Fatty acids can influence the expression of adipokines, directly by interaction with transcription factors, or indirectly via unknown mechanisms possibly associated with fatty acid synthesis, storage or oxidation.
  2. This study was to investigate the effects of different kinds of fat intake on RBP4 and omentin-1 levels in obese women.
  • Methods
  1. Study Population            272 obese women from a nutrition clinic of Shariati hospital
  2. Body Composition Measurements                    body composition analyzer
  3. Circulating Adipokines Measurements                    an ELISA method
  4. Dietary Intake Assessment                    3-day 24-h dietary recall
  5. Nutritionist4 software                    calculated an individual’s dietary fats intake
